Sorry Gallery, you’ve been benched.

It seems that DreamHost has opted to ditch Gallery in lieu of zenphoto when they rollout their newest patches/updates to their One-Click Installs.

…and dammit, I couldn’t be happier.  In software development and software testing “we” call software like Gallery one thing — bloatware.

Granted, I’ve used Gallery since its inception and in fact, it’s all I’ve ever used, but you better believe I wish I had a better alternative and the time to invest learning it.  In fact, Gallery made me gun shy — that’s right.

So afraid to try anything new for fear it would be as horribly confusing as it was.  Well, I may not be much smarter, but I’m definitely much braver.

I’ll be seeing what is in the works for porting existing pictures — despite zenphoto only having a Web interface thus far.

Sorry Gallery, but you won’t be missed.

    Glad to hear that you’re happy Zenphoto is replacing Gallery. I’m interested in hearing more about how the transition goes for you and anyone else you know using Dreamhost.

    Feel free to visit us and request features you find lacking or necessary for your use, http://www.zenphoto.org of course.

    Gallery was definitely a motivation for me to make Zenphoto, so this (and dreamhost’s announcement http://wiki.dreamhost.com/V10.2_February_2008 ) is a welcome sort of vindication for me :)

    Ah, one other thing Dreamhost failed to mention is that Zenphoto was originally designed to be fully manageable via file transfer (FTP or SFTP). However, Dreamhost’s 1-click install hides the Zenphoto directories in an inaccessible place.

    If you want to move things around easier, I highly recommend you install it on your own, which is very easy. Then you can just move your Gallery photos directly into Zenphoto’s Albums folder and they’ll become albums automagically.

    @Tristan,

    Everyone loves to hear their baby is making headway — and I’m definitely a proud onlooker. Congratulations!

    Also, thanks for the tips on installing yourself (which I ALWAYS do). I’m glad to hear there are some perks to a self-install — that Web-only option wasn’t thrilling, but I figured it’d be upgraded soon enough.

    I noticed as well, DreamHost mentioned that the were working on integration with WordPress — yet the zenphoto site says you guys/gals are working on it. Which is it?

    Oh, and Josh specifically said that it was “zenphoto,” not “Zenphoto.” Again, which is it?

    Thanks for stopping by!
